EYES AND EARS
“22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great [is] that darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23
Ever wondered how that tune got stuck in your head? Or how you came by the habit of biting your lips when confused? Mind you, you weren’t wired with those. You just happen to have picked those up along the line by hearing and seeing it respectively. How? Well, through our ears and eyes, of course. They’re the doors through which tidings from the world enter our bodies (minds) to be processed.
The things that we see or hear directly shapes our behavior and lifestyle, thus, it is very important to be mindful of what we watch and listen to.Come to think of it, we see these in toddlers all the time. A child growing up, picks up a language based on what he/she hears and the behavioral pattern of said child would be invariably affected by what the child sees around him/her.
Here’s the twist though, it’s not only children but every one of us. We tend to pick up accents, behaviors, even languages, mostly in part from the company we find ourselves in. Sometimes, without really knowing.
Here’s what the word of God says. From our opening verses, we are made aware that if our eyes are good then our whole body will be good but if our eyes are bad, then our body will be bad as well. It is very necessary to be mindful of what we look at. There have been several testimonies of people being influenced to make a decision or take an action because of what they saw. That right there, shows how much power there is behind what we see.
Better late than never, right? If that be the case, then, it’s not too late to close our eyes to those things which are evil. I’ll leave room for you, yes, you to think through the things which you know are evil so we all can make an effort to shut them out and keep our eyes closed. Brethren, let us set our eyes on the word of God and on the things above. For we are but pilgrims here and God is not man that He will lie. Don’t lose sight of your focus to please God and make it to His bosom. This world with all that’s in it is passing away. Let us, therefore look to God. Let the word which you have set your eyes on reflect who God is. Let’s love, give, worship, serve but mostly, let’s love. For if we love God, we’ll live according to His precepts.
“17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Now, our ears! Our ears provide another opening to the world so, we need to make sure they are tuned to “the word.” You may not be watching pornography, reading erotic novels and the likes but you may be eavesdropping and listening to all that’s wrong spiritually, emotionally and mentally. As we can be easily influenced by what we hear, we must endeavor to do some sifting.
“24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.” Mark 4:24
Build up your faith. Listen to sermons and Christian songs, read your Bible, focus on the things of above. Never give the devil space.
And always remember, our eyes and ears open into our minds and influence the choices we make.
Alas! Be mindful of what you watch and listen to.
